2015 MGR Reading Challenge

Happy Holidays ladies! While there are many reading challenges out there for you to choose from, we thought it might be fun to do a Mocha Girls inspired challenge. The challenge is simple. The idea is to have fun reading books with titles that will spell out “MOCHA GIRLS 15” by the end of the year.

How it Works:

You can do this challenge in many ways:

1) Choose books with TITLES that spell out “Mocha Girls” (1 title per letter of the alphabet). The title must begin with the letter you are completing.

2) Choose books whose authors LAST names spell out “Mocha Girls” (1 name per letter of the alphabet). The author’s last name must begin with the letter you are completing.

3) Combine BOTH of the above; however, you can only have one title or author’s name per letter of the alphabet.

4) Choose two books with TITLES that start with ONE and FIVE to complete “Mocha Girls 15” . The title must begin with the number you are completing.

Confused? Here’s an example using all of methods above:

M – The Husband’s Secret by Liane Moriarty.
O – Outlander by Diana Gabaldon
C – The House Girl by Tara Conklin
H – The Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness
A – A Christmas Prayer by Kimberla Lawson Roby
G – Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn
I – Ignite Me by Tahereh Mafi
R – The Edge of Never by J.A. Redmerski
L – Light by Michael Grant
S – Sugar by Bernice L. McFadden
1 – One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez
5 – Five Flavors of Dumb by Antony John

Levels:

To keep things fun, choose the level from the three options below you feel most comfortable attempting. However, once you pick a level, please stick to it throughout the challenge.

  1. Off like a rocket – completion of spelling “Mocha Girls” (this way, you only read 10 books)
  2. Out of this world – completion of spelling “Mocha Girl” and adding the “15” (this way, you read 12 books)
  3. Warp speed –  completing levels 1 and 2, AND reading all 2015 Books of the Month (a whopping 24 books)
Add your participation level in the comments below. If you complete the level you signed up for, you will be entered for a giveaway valued at $30.00!

Sign Up and Spread the Word:

If you’re a blogger grab the button (above) and write a quick post about the challenge to help spread the word. Add your post to the sign up below, and continue to update your post with your progress throughout the year.

If you’re not a blogger, create a Goodreads shelf for the challenge and use the link to sign up. Also, you can still help spread the word by posting on Facebook or Tweeting about the challenge.

You have until midnight on December 31, 2015 to complete the challenge! Good luck and have fun!

Misprint right – we have until Dec. 31, 2015, not 2014 to complete this challenge?

    • Yes, that’s correct. I fixed it. Thanks Lisa.

Please reply back with your participation level, so it’s recorded.

  • Kishma

So, I added the link to my Good Reads account. Where should I post which level of the challenge I would like to complete?

I would like to complete the “Out of this World” Challenge.

    • Sorry that was left out. I added to follow your lead and add your participation level here in the comments. It’s not really possible on Goodreads.

  • I will be participating at the Warp Speed level.

  • Classy Green

Page – Would the book Fifth Born by Zelda Lockhart be used for “5”?

    • Yes, that can work. Don’t want to be too much of a stickler and take away from the fun.

      • Classy Green

        Thanks Page

  • I am aiming for Warp Speed on this one for sure! Thanks Page!! 🙂

    • Not a problem 🙂

  • Marlene Johnson

    I’m in – I’ll do the 10 for now, and see how i do…

Question – do the books have to be read in MGR order? That is surely part of the challenge – but it could be limiting (since I’ve already got four books to start off January)!?

    • Hi Marlene — no, you don’t have to read the books in any order. Just finish by the end of the year and you’re all good!

  • Tanisha

HI everyone!! I’m interested in joining the challenge. Sounds like a lot of fun. My reading slacked alot this year. I love reading and really want to get back to it. I will join the off like a rocket category.

  • Classy Green

This is a great way to read some book series or books you received at MGR Anniversary Events.

    • Glad you think so, and great idea. I’ve got some series I need to finish. The book from my example representing “I” is one of them.

      • Classy Green

        The series sounds very interesting.

  • LFrazier

Hey Page! I just read my post, I meant to choose “Warp Speed” for my 2015 Challenge. Is it too late to correct what was previously selected?

  • Donna Davis

I’d like to participate at the Warp Speed level but cannot figure out how to link to this with Goodreads.

    • Each Goodreads shelf has a unique URL. So, open Goodreads and create the shelf. Then click on the shelf. The URL will change and be unique to that shelf, incorporating the title. Copy the URL, and come to this page.

Right above the last line of copy, there’s a blue button with the frog. Click on it, and it will open up a new page. On that page, there will be a thinner button that says “add your link.” Click on it. It will reveal three text boxes. In the first, paste in your shelf URL. Then in the next two, add your name and email address, and hit submit. That will do it!

Let me know if you get stuck 🙂

      • DDub

  • V Taylor

Count me in for this challenge and I’m aiming for “Warp Speed.”

  • Asata V

I love to read and am excited to participate in this challenge. I’m going to participate at the Out of This World level.

  • I have a question about using book titles to complete this challenge. If a title begins with an article such as THE, A, or AN, can we use the next word as the first word in the title or not? I’m curious because it appears that a lot of the books I’m reading begin with THE or A, such as THE RELUCTANT MIDWIFE, A REUNION OF GHOSTS, THE INVENTION OF FIRE, and more.

  • Angela Reid

I’m taking the challenge. I plan to complete the “out of this world” level. Thanks for setting up the challenge! I’m motivated!

  • Shana Plummer

sounds great… put me down for “off like a rocket”
