January Book of the Month: From Compton to Congress by Walter R. Tucker III

*** BIG NEWS! ***

Every single month we nominate and vote for a theme based book to be our Book of the Month. This month will be a bit different. This month we are not going to nominate and vote. Why? Well, for the month of January we are honored to have our first Sponsored Book of the Month. What is a sponsored book? The author and or publisher has agreed to pay Mocha Girls Read (non-profit) book club for the honor of being our Book of the Month. Along with this honor the book, author, and publisher are going to get some really great things as well.

The first Mocha Girl Read Sponored Book of the Month for January 2018 is From Compton to Congress: His Grace for My Race by Walter R. Tucker III.  Take a minute to see what this book is all about.

Synopsis

From Compton to Congress reveals shocking criminal charges, based on an FBI Sting, that send Congressman Walter R. Tucker III reeling, and changes his life forever. Against the great odds of overcoming the tough streets of Compton, young Tucker fulfills his goals of becoming valedictorian of Compton High School, graduate of USC with honors, graduate of Georgetown Law School, passing the California State Bar, and filling his father’s vacant seat as Mayor of Compton—all by age 33. During his meteoric rise in the political arena, at age 35 he becomes the youngest African-American from California to be elected to a U.S. congressional seat. However, the U.S. Attorney’s federal indictment against him shocks the nation. Tucker’s choice to fight the charges against him thrusts him into a criminal trial that tests the condition of his human spirit and provokes us to reflect on every man’s plight versus every man’s fight.

Meet the Author

Pastor Walter R. Tucker III

After receiving his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from U.S.C. in 1978, and his Juris Doctorate  from Georgetown Law School in 1981, Walter worked as a Los Angeles County deputy district attorney, established his own law firm, served as Mayor of Compton, California, and was elected to the U.S. Congress in 1993–all by age 35.

While in his second congressional term, Walter was indicted for receiving bribes while he was Mayor of Compton. Walter fought the case against him, but was convicted in 1995, and sentenced to serve 18 months in federal prison. After his conviction, Walter received his call to full-time ministry. He began his ministry inside prison, and upon release in 1998, he served as Manager of Helps Ministry at Crenshaw Christian Center (Los Angeles, CA), then as the Los Angeles Area Director of Prison Fellowship Ministries (Los Angeles, CA), and was finally ordained in 2003 as a pastor by From the Heart Church Ministries (Suitland, MD) in 2003.

In 2012, after pastoring From the Heart Church Ministries of Chicago for nine years, Walter returned home to the Los Angeles area and founded his own ministry, Truth and Love Christian Church, located in Carson, California. The church has over 300 members 40 different ministries and oversees churches in Africa.

Pastor Tucker has been called to help saints overcome their past and enjoy “daily

victorious living” through his teachings on “True Prosperity.” God has also graced him to train and equip ministers and church leaders to carry out the purpose of God, fulfill their destiny in Christ, and be a part of effecting a Great Harvest of souls in these End Times.

Walter has been happily married to Reverend Robin Tucker for 31 years and they are the proud parents of Walter R. Tucker, IV,  and Spencer and Autumn Tucker-Rodney, and have one wonderful grandson, Spencer Rodney, Jr.

Walter is still the youngest African American to serve in the U.S. House of Representative from the state of California. (read more)

2nd Annual Black Friday Readathon ’17: My TBR

Hosted by DuLivre, Mocha Girls Read and Books and Sensibility.

I am so looking forward to this.  I love read-a-thons because they FORCE me to sit and spend the day reading.  I don’t need to be forced but you know how life can interfer with a day off.  All of sudden you have a few errands to run and next thing you know the day is over.  So for me scheduling a read-a-thon in my month helps me to read and do nothing else.

So for the day I am planning the following.

Meet the Authors

Donna Hill

My official writing career began in 1987 when my first short story was published. My first novel, Rooms of the Heart was published in 1990. Since then there have been a slew of books and short stories that I’ve had published, from romance to women’s fiction, chic-lit, erotica and mysteries. I enjoy them all. Three of my novels were adapted for television so that was exciting. I’ve had the honor of conceptualizing and editing several collections: After the Vows, Midnight Clear, Where There’s a Will, Indecent Exposure, and The Hot Spot. I currently write full time and live in Brooklyn, NY with my family.

Farrah Rochon

A native of south Louisiana, Farrah Rochon officially began her writing career while waiting in between classes in the student lounge at Xavier University of Louisiana. After earning her Bachelors of Science degree and a Masters of Arts from Southeastern Louisiana University, Farrah decided to pursue her lifelong dream of becoming a published novelist. She was named Shades of Romance Magazine’s Best New Author of 2007. Her debut novel, Deliver Me, the first in her Holmes Brothers series, garnered rave reviews, earning Farrah several SORMAG Readers’ Choice Awards.
In September 2010, Farrah joined the Kimani Romance family with the launch of her new series that follows the life of the fictional New York Sabers football team.
When she is not writing in her favorite coffee shop, Farrah spends most of her time reading her favorite romance novels, hanging around on Twitter, and trying to attend as many Broadway shows as her budget will allow. An admitted sports fanatic, Farrah feeds her addiction to football by watching New Orleans Saints games on Sunday afternoons.

K.M. Jackson

A native New Yorker, K.M. Jackson had two dreams for what she wanted to be when she “grew up”: 1. a fashion designer and 2. a writer.
After graduating from high school, she pursued her first dream and studied fashion design at New York’s FIT. She then spent ten years designing for various New York houses. But after years of jugging the oh-so-glam world of mid-market fashion along with being a mother of twins, K.M. took the leap of faith and decided to pursue her other long held dream of being a writer.
She currently lives in a suburb of New York with her husband, teen twins, and her precocious terrier named Jack who keeps them keeps her on her toes.
