The Mocha Girls Read Story

After looking all over the internet for a book club, I found two and joined them both.  They were really great and I have made a few new friends from them.  But I noticed one thing about both of them…I was the only black, woman of color, African-American, mocha girl in the clubs.  I thought about this for a while and finally said to myself, “Self, there has got to be some sistas in LA who like to read.”

So Mocha Girls Read was born.

Mocha Girls Read is a new monthly book club based in the Los Angeles area.  We are a group of black women who love to read, want to read more and meet like-minded women.  The books we read range from fiction, self-help, historical romance, best sellers, good ol’ short stories and basically anything we can get our hands on.  Mocha Girls Read brings black women in the community together to read great literature, online and in person chit chatting about the monthly selection and a whole lot more.

Books were my pass to personal freedom.  I learned to read at age three, and soon discovered there was a whole world to conquer that went beyond our farm in Mississippi.  – Oprah Winfrey.

Since our first meeting we have grown to include a new chapters in Arizona.  If you want to be a Mocha Girl Read member just go to the Join Us link and join us anytime.  (By the way, you don’t have to be in LA to be a book club member.)

Take a minute or two and roam around the site.  Here you will find information about book club meetings, giveaways, a monthly newsletter and of course books.
