Meet the Team

Mocha Girl Alysia -Founder/Organizer of Los Angeles Chapter

I am the daughter of a bookaholic currently living in Los Angeles after several years traveling and living in South Korea, Egypt and Japan.  I loved them all equally and read so many books on my travels.  I am single with an overstuffed book case.  This whole experience I have had and still having with this book club is the “Cherry on top!”

Favorite Book(s) of all time:  The Red Tent, March, Ready Player One, Counting by 7s, The Kitchen House, All the Anne Rice Vampire books, Room, The Help and many more.  My TBR list is crazy long:  Cinder, Bo’s Cafe, The Cutting Season, Homegoing and Changeless.  I started Mocha Girls Read to be with Black women who want to read and love books just as much as I do.

I am native of St. Louis, Mo. now presently living here in Tempe, AZ.  I live my life with purpose and passion. I believe that you should live your life to the Fullest!Send a kiss

Favorite book of all time: I have two books that I often find myself reference back to (1) Lessons in Living by Susan L. Taylor read this in July, 1997 and (2) When Good isn’t Good Enough by Ron Willingham (2002) at that time in my life these books helped me make it through the storms in my life.  My favorite book could be at any giving time one that I get lost in and I become that character, I can feel that characters emotion through out the book, that book that I don’t want to put down, it keeps me reading anxiously awaiting the end; *Keep in mind, I am a “Happy Ending” girl (lol)  On my TBR list: I purpose and plan on reading 2 books a month starting January 2012, that will be inclusive of my monthly read with my Mocha Girls Read’s book. Winking smile
I joined Mocha Girls Read to meet other like minded readers, to share our thoughts and opinions on the books that we read individually but come together as a whole and chat it up!

MeMocha Girl Classandra – Organizer of Joliet Chapter

My name is Classandra, but my nickname is Classy (short for Classandra). I have been an avid reader since I learned to read. It gave me the opportunity to escape and discover new things.  My favorite books include:  The Year of Yes by Shonda Rhimes, All American Boys by Jason Reynolds and Anybody’s Daughter by Pamela Samuels Young.  Some books on my (TBR) to be read list  are Black Water Rising by Attica Locke, Perfect Peace by Daniel Black and The Summer We Got Free by Mia McKenzie.

I decided to join Mocha Girls Read after reading the answer to “What is a Mocha Girl anyways?” from the website. I could totally relate. I had been in a few Book Clubs and felt very limited on the book selection from the women in the group. I also love the book selection process.

Mocha Girl Pascale- Website Editor-in-Chief

Hello, All!

I have been in love with books and reading for as long as I can remember, but my love for book clubs began during my senior year of high school. The school’s librarian, a few other book lovers and myself gathered every two weeks to discuss books, life, and other issues. It was easily one of my favorite moments of high school. After that, I was constantly on the lookout for another book club to join, but none of them had the right feel to it. Enter Mocha Girls Read! I found out about this club a month after I moved to New York, and right away I knew that our group was a great space for black girls and women to laugh, think and fellowship.

Some of my favorite books are Naughts and Crosses by Malorie Blackman, The Stranger by Albert Camus, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Help by Kathryn Stockett, and Angus, Thongs and Full Frontal Snogging (the entire series) by Louise Rennison.

My TBR List is unending it feels like, however I am slowly but surely working my way through the Harry Potter series right now. I know, I know, I am incredibly late to the party, but it’s never too late to start a good series and I am enjoying the novels so far!

When I’m not lost in a good book, I am either at the movie theaters, writing, or napping. Can’t wait to get to know you girls some more!

Reading and writing are my greatest passions. I love the feeling you get when the whole world melts away and you just fall into the book. While I have a predilection for Urban Fantasy and Paranormal Romance, I welcome all genres. I also prefer readings series over standalone books and am addicted to audiobooks.  Outside of reading, I pretty much have the same devotion for film and television. Give me a good story and I’m satisfied, no matter the medium. I can’t live without music in my life and have pretty eclectic taste. I also have loved hockey since seeing The Mighty Ducks films as kid; but no, I am not a Ducks fan.

Favorite Books: Ready Player One by Ernie Cline, Cold Days by Jim Butcher, and Heart of Obsidian by Nalini Singh, The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett and the Goosebumps and Babysitters Club series.

TBR List: Graffiti Moon by Cath Crowley; S. by J.J. Abrams & Doug Dorst; The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart; Six of Hearts by L.H. Cosway and Zodiac by Romina Russell.

Why I Joined: I tend to be a bit of a hermit and my mom strongly suggested, on many occasions, that I join an in-person book club instead of only participating online on Goodreads. Why I stayed is for the fabulous community that Mocha Girls Read offers. I count the days until our next meeting!
